A great thing about Chicago is our public transportation system that allows a poor girl like me to get around despite not being able to afford having a car. I ride the bus to work every day and, let's face it, there is no better place to people watch than on a bus; the most interesting human beings seem to be attracted to this sort of transportation.
The last couple of days, I've noticed the most divine older woman riding the bus. She always wears a shawl, Tory Burch flats and pearls in her ears; it takes all my energy not to scream out, "BE MY GRANDMA"! Plus, I truly admire a lady with such exquisite taste not feeling like she is above riding the bus.
Someday I will have the courage to talk to her and ask her what makes her so classy and how she's managed to mantain that. For now, I can only hope that I will someday be that lady impressing the pants out of all the 24 years olds...on the bus, of course.

That is such an adorable story. I wish we had public transportation around here... living in the country sucks sometimes.
That sounds awesome. I know exactly what you mean about wanting to be like her when you're old - I say the same thing everytime I sit on my balcony and watch the fabulous eccentric elegant old ladies in my neighbourhood.
I really enjoy your writing by the way!
We used to have a woman like that come into the place I used to work... She always had the cutest outfits. Makes me want to stockpile some of my vintage so I can wear it when I'm her age!
here's a true story:
my bestest friend in the world and i were sitting outside at a restaurant having lunch when this super stylish amazing looking older woman walks past and after she is safely out of ear-shot we both go "i wanna look like THAT when i get older"... then about 20 mins later we both look up and are FLOORED by these two older women walking towards us.
they are both a little hunched over and have on the brightest red lipstick smeared a little out of the lines, tons of costume jewelry, and their grey hair perfectly set from the beauty parlor.... and as they shuffle nearer - HOLDING HANDS- we both tear-up just a little and say "scratch that - WE wanna be them!"
i LOVE chic older women, too. i weirdly look forward to getting gray hair :)
